‘Nocturnes Vol. 1’ is a six-track ambient EP from Mark Barrott and Richard Norris, created as a slow-moving, reflective work designed for relaxation, calmness and deep listening.
A constant innovator across nearly four decades, Barrott’s career has spanned breakbeat futurism ('Time and Bass', 1996), downtempo introspection ('Memories From A Fading Room', 2007), and the balearic-leaning ‘Sketches From An Island' series following the launch of his International Feel label in Uruguay. Alongside his own work, he has produced for artists including South African DJ Themba and the late Virgil Abloh, and in 2022 debuted on Anjunachill with ‘Johatsu’, followed up with ‘Everything Changes, Nothing Ends’ and ‘I Am The Sun, You Are The Moon’. Barrott’s music has received widespread critical acclaim and radio support from BBC Radio 6 (Mary Anne Hobbs, Zakia, Nemone, Giles Peterson), BBC Radio 3 (Night Tracks, Hannah Peel), and KEXP, as well as features in Pitchfork, MOJO, Uncut, and Resident Advisor. Most recently in 2025, Mark was celebrated by Pitchfork as the ‘master of sunset music,’ with The Guardian praising him for ‘flying the flag for the original Ibizan chillout spirit, cementing his place as one of the defining artists in contemporary chillout and downtempo music.
Richard Norris has worked in music since before the dawn of acid house. He co-produced ‘Jack The Tab’, one of the UK's very first acid house influenced albums, before forming the Grid with Soft Cell's Dave Ball in 1988. The band went on to release three albums and 10 UK hit singles, including the Balearic classic ‘Floatation’ and the million-selling ‘Swamp Thing’. He's collaborated with many artists, including Sun Ra, Robert Fripp, Joe Strummer, Billie Ray Martin, Timothy Leary and has remixed Brian Eno, Yello, Tame Impala, Erasure, and over three hundred others. His psychedelic duo with Erol Alkan, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, released a critically acclaimed album 'The Soft Bounce', and provided remixes for dozens of artists including Tracey Thorn, the Chemical Brothers, Midlake and many more. More recently, Norris has focused on ambient and deep listening through his ongoing ‘Music For Healing’ series on his Group Mind label.
Speaking on the EP, Norris says:
"I've known Mark Barrott for many seasons, and we've always found our sonic paths have a lot in common. This EP is the first result of our collaboration, which bounced between Spain and East Sussex via many sessions. It's a hazy, reflective set, a moonlit soundtrack to float away on”.
‘Nocturnes Vol. 1’ is out now on Anjunachill.
