Born from the underground Midlands music scene of the mid-’90s, 'Fiji' was created during a period of ambition, experimentation, and resilience. What began as a small independent record shop and basement studio quickly became a creative hub for producers, DJs, and clubbers chasing the evolving progressive trance sound. After early releases and countless late nights spent writing, engineering, and refining ideas, disaster struck when severe floods submerged the studio in 1998, destroying years of equipment, recordings, and irreplaceable instruments. For a moment, it looked like the end.

Instead, the flood became the catalyst for a new beginning. Rebuilding the studio from scratch George Winkworth, alongside Lloyd Horton and Paul Kershaw, channelled everything they had learned into a fresh creative direction. In that first session in the rebuilt studio, the now-iconic riff for 'Fiji' emerged spontaneously, evolving into a track that fused progressive depth with uplifting trance energy. Layer by layer, the production came together organically — driven by instinct, experimentation, and the chemistry between three people completely immersed in the music.

Alongside the release of the new song, the project adopted the name Atlantis, inspired by the flooded studio and the idea of something rising again after being lost beneath the water. That spirit of rebirth became embedded in Fiji itself. More than just a trance record, the track became a symbol of perseverance and creativity under pressure .

Now almost thirty years later, Oliver Smith gives fans his own fresh take on the classic dance record. A mainstay artist on Anjunabeats over the last 20 years and on the heels of his 2025 album 'Footprints', the classic trance hit gets a new push from another legendary name in the genre.
