Multi-instrumentalist and producer obli returns with ‘Sun Sun Sun’, a hazy, beat-driven electronica track taken from his upcoming album ‘Soft Speak’, landing 28th May. Hailing from Newark, Ohio and now based in Los Angeles, obli brings over 15 years of touring, studio work and musical experience into a solo project that blends sample-driven electronica, warm textures and emotive songwriting. The obli project is centered around dynamic sample work and subtle textures outputted through an electronic lens. “obli is me,” he exclaims. “All of the music I’ve played and listened to brought me to this point creatively. It is the sum of my past and present as well as the art I’ve made thus far. It feels personal, warm, and deep.”
He began his career touring with Sonny Moore, aka Skrillex, before going on to spend years on the road and in the studio with Dead Sara and playing guitar for multi-platinum, GRAMMY-nominated superstar Julia Michaels. Whilst obli started as a side project in 2019, it quickly gathered momentum when his debut release was spotted in a mix by Mild Minds, leading to a signing with ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective. Since then, obli has released a diverse array of songs, receiving support from radio, press and tastemakers including Zane Lowe (Apple Music 1), BBC Radio (Jack Saunders, Lauren Laverne, Annie Mac, Sian Eleri, Craig Charles), Double J, Wonderland, NOTION, Line Of Best Fit, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Lane 8 and ODESZA. As a live performer, obli has recently toured North America supporting BAYNK and performed headline shows including an EP launch at Barboza in Seattle. Now stepping into his next chapter, obli continues to refine a sound that feels personal, warm and deeply human - electronic music built from lived experience.
Leaning into hazy, psychedelic textures and downtempo, percussion-led rhythms, ‘Sun Sun Sun’ places the beat at its core. Built around a loop that immediately sparked the track’s direction, the song channels a loose, hypnotic energy, with washed-out vocal samples drifting in and out of focus. “The beat is obviously the driver in this song, and when I found that loop, I was like, ‘I have to figure out getting this into a track,’” obli explains. “I was hoping the chorus would be a tribute to early Clams Casino, where his big beats just drove everything. Another friend of mine that I had listen to the album told me he loved how psychedelic everything is. I loved hearing that, and I think some of the treatment of the vocal samples makes things feel that way.”
‘Sun Sun Sun’ is out now on Anjunachill.
